Mario Adventure is a fan-made alteration of Super Mario Bros 3 and is widely considered the best Fan game of all time. Its author, DahrkDaiz, single-handedly made new maps and levels from scratch.  It contains tons of new features like changing weather, item reserve, plus many many more.
